VLSI is the field which involves packing more and more logic devices into smaller and smaller areas. Thanks to VLSI, circuits that would have taken boardfuls of space can be put into a small space of few millimeters across! A chip not only contains millions of transistors but a lot of knowledge and capability. The size of chip is decreasing day by day. Today, we have a maze of miniaturized electronic items like watches, cameras, lap-top and palm-top computers, multifunction hand held devices, mobile phones etc., all because of VLSI. It is therefore that the 21st century has been called the electronics century and VLSI-the fuel of this century.
